Oak Framed Extension, Moat Cottage, Suffolk

Oak Framed Extension, Moat Cottage, Suffolk

About Project
The project: oak framed extension

This picture-perfect house is Moat Cottage in Suffolk, part of the Wilderness Reserve Estate. We built the timber framed extension from green oak, using king post trusses. The oak rafters are exposed internally which achieves the warmth and character of a traditional farmhouse, whilst showcasing craftsmanship in the skeletal framework of the hipped roof structure. The client achieved a dream kitchen and entertainment space which brings the outside in, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Secondary project: oak framed bridge

The client also asked us to construct a green oak framed bridge – seen in the first photo to the front of the house – this bridge provides the sole access to a holiday cottage which is surrounded by a moat, so you really do arrive in style.

The balustradsing on this bridge take reference from a particular style of ‘diamond’ window mullion found in Suffolk. We incorporated a composite grip strip into the oak decking to provide a safe access for visitors, whilst maintaining material integrity and continuity in oak.

We were particularly proud of this project when we visited some years later for a friend’s wedding. To see the bride and groom walking over our bridge was pretty special.

Residential oak framing

Our residential work includes home extensions, barn conversions, complete houses, porches, garden rooms and orangeries. Our work features both traditional and contemporary timber framing techniques. And we can advise on the best approach to this for your particular project.

The beauty of timber framing construction, particularly with a residential project, is the off-site manufacturing process. This speeds up on-site construction, so a structure can be erected and watertight in a matter of days.
