Colemore Pavilion, Hampshire

Colemore Pavilion, Hampshire

About Project

This thatched garden pavilion sits in a private garden in Hampshire. It sits at the far side of a large pond and formal gardens, with views over the fields beyond.

Water Reed Thatching & Woven Hazel Cladding

We built this thatched garden pavilion in partnership with Ben Collyns of Country Craft Master Thatchers. Ben designed the structure and enlisted Jonny to work with him on the timber work. Large stripped larch trunks ‘in the round’ support the softwood roof structure. The thatch is water reed and the cladding is woven hazel panels, coated with linseed oil. As well as being a natural oil, linseed oil has excellent UV protection and anti-mould growth properties

There is seating inside the pavilion, made of cedar, which a very durable timber and smells amazing!

Collaboration in Traditional Crafts

Ben and Jonny met on the Prince’s Foundation Building Craft Apprenticeship in 2011 and went on to tutor on the programme together the following year. Their first collaboration together was the Peach House at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, a beautiful Scottish baronial style garden folly. Traditional crafts such as thatching and oak framing require versatile skills and team work. Keeping these skills alive and passing them onto the next generation is something both Ben and Jonny are passionate about.

Garden Pavilions, Bothies & Cabins

We love designing and building garden structures of all kinds, from secret woodland cabins to formal garden pavilions and bothies. Have a look at our garden buildings for more inspiration.
